Inspiring Stories From Doctors
Medic Footprints Malaysia played a big role in my career transformation. Connections I made through Medic Footprints has helped me in job searching and opened up my mind to the ample choices available out there.
Medic Footprints Malaysia played a big role in my career transformation. I landed for a job at an Aesthetic Clinic and inspired me to restart my Housemanship again.
I never knew that as a doctor, I could venture outside of clinical medicine. It's as though our default path is being a HO-MO/GP-registrar-specialist-consultant. This was after 18 years of practising clinical medicine. I felt I have reached my maximum output as a doctor and deep down I felt I needed a challenge, push myself and break away from the same routine. I kept searching for my way and could not find much until I stumbled upon Medic Footprint Malaysia and Selina Chew. I wrote to her some time back and after a while, I started following them on social media. I became fascinated and intrigued by featured doctors on their social media where they talked about career opportunities beyond clinical medicine. Selina offered a great opportunity for me to grow exponentially in my career and skills in the middle of this year. I grabbed the opportunity and that's where I am now-currently a medical advisor for a TPA. It was initially very challenging as I had to force my body, brain and spirit to adapt to my new environment and learn new skills at a faster rate. My family and colleagues have been extremely supportive in my career transition. I can never thank them enough. I continue to gain new skills everyday. I incorporate all of my clinical skills in my new work and it is very exciting. This new shift in my career is something that I have been longing for. I really owe it to Selina and her team for opening my eyes to the world outside of clinical medicine and giving me the opportunity to grow my career and skills, in addition to discovering new potentials within myself. To all doctors out there- it is never too late to learn something new, never ever doubt yourself!"
I was previously working as a doctor in the Ministry of Health Malaysia for close to eight years. I recently left my position to pursue a career outside of clinical medicine. And, honestly, it was not really an easy decision. It took me a couple of years to make that decision. I thought about it a couple of years ago, almost went through it, but I was not ready to leave at that moment. It was during COVID, actually. And after about two to three years, I was still sort of revisiting that option, which made me sort of take this leap into another industry. I was researching about groups and organisations in Malaysia, outside Malaysia, for doctors who have left clinical medicine or even went to YouTube when I was looking at videos on how doctors felt after leaving clinical medicine and doing other things and then I found Medic Footprints Malaysia. I joined their Diverse Careers For Doctors Summit on August 2022 and I went for an interview and I got a position at a pharmaceutical company. And I really think being at that summit helped me a lot with meeting the right people and and talking to the right people.
“The first medical community in Malaysia for doctors to explore diverse career outside of hospital”. I came across medic footprints when I was browsing for jobs as a locum doctor. Dr Selina’s story immediately caught my eye, and without much hesitation, I contacted her. We exchanged our experience working as a government doctor in MOH Malaysia and I told her that I was keen to scout for a career out of clinical practice. I never expect to receive a call from her that would change my life entirely. I’m now working in a Health-Tech startup and I’m proud to say that I have finally found my dream job! Thank you Medic FootPrints for making this possible.
As a medical officer who is interested to work & contribute away from hospital settings, Medicfootprints is one of the significant platform in my journey looking for alternatives to work away from hospital. Medicfootprints provide all the information, guides & supports for all medical professionals to move into a new medical related fields or workplace. I am grateful to have found Medicfootprints to help me achieve my goals.
When I quit clinical medicine due to health issues, everyday I wondered what would my exact calling be. As medical students, we were only exposed to practicing clinical medicine as there was hardly any exposure to what a medical graduate can do outside of the hospital. A friend of mine introduced me to medicfootrpints and when I read Dr Selina's profile, I knew I wasn't alone in this journey. Earlier this year, medicfootprints had shared an advertisement for a job opening in Sunway Medical Centre as a medical planning executive. Although I had a job back then, I decided to give it a try as my one year with my current employer was going to end in August and I wanted a head start on job hunting as it is pretty tough to get one during this pandemic. Fortunately, I managed to secure the job in Sunway as a medical planning executive and I will be starting this journey next month. This job has great perks and good career progression. I am glad that Malaysia has this platform which supports doctors which also normalises non-clinical related jobs for doctors. Thank you MedicFootPrints, you may have just given me the opportunity to build my career outside of the hospital.
